Six Days on the Road Day 3

Snow in June

Ketchum and the Sun Valley were stuck in the middle of an unmoving cloud filled with snow.

I decided to backtrack about 30 miles on route 75 to avoid the 9,000 plus foot mountain pass. "Take the route through Arco" the locals kept saying.
I had assumed Arco was a large metropolis, but discovered Arco has fewer than 1000 people.
Along this route, you pass through the lava craters. Beneath this lava is an aquifer as large as Lake Erie. Much of this can stay frozen beneath the lava even in summer. You can even visit an ice cave.
I visited the Craters of the Moon national monument. Although it was beautiful in the snow, it would have been more exciting to see the lava and perhaps take a little hike.

The drive along Route 93 out of Idaho and into Montana is spectacular as it follows the Salmon River. The Lewis and Clark crew must have also thought so when they traveled here in 1805
Take it. Stop and have a picnic.

I traveled on to Stevensville to stay with my friends the Schwartzmanns for the night.
How do I know so many people with lovely homes in such beautiful places. All I have to do is show up and enjoy it.
Tina and Steve S. look out their windows to beautiful mountain peaks and rolling valley land in all directions.
Forgive me. I was so busy chatting and admiring that I forgot to take pictures.

Tina is very artistic she sends beautiful handmade cards and previously created watercolors. She asked me to select some handmade treasures. I chose an origami tulip and a beaded bullet to bedeck Bazil Ty Jr's lap in my ol' 95.

(For those of you who don't know, grandson Bazil gave me this doll when he was 3 saying "I don't know who you talk to when I am not with you." He wanted me to have this doll so I always had someone to talk to. This doll has traveled with me for 9 years.)

Steve has the same sharp mind and amazing memory that he did when he received a PhD in Chemistry about 40 years ago. He didn't say it aloud, but I saw the thought bubble over his head: "How is this woman going to get herself around the USA for a year?" I won't bother to reiterate all my behaviors that precipitated this concern - I might appear to be bragging!
